Transition Year Work Experience Blog #2

As part of our TY work experience week during Engineers Week 2020 we asked our placement students to write a short blog post outlining their experience with CONFIRM. We will be posting these periodically over the next month so keep an eye on the website for updates!

Here is our second instalment from Ian:

“Hi I am Ian and I’m 16 years old and am currently in Transition Year. I decided to do work experience with CONFIRM as I was interested in the goals of the centre and what they are aiming to do. The robotics aspect of the research interested me as I would like to work in that area in the future.

From my work experience, I learned about the extent to which companies currently understand and use Smart Manufacturing technologies and what CONFIRM is doing to help companies in this way. My favourite part of the week at the centre was the use of 3D design software, which allowed us to 3D print our own personalised keyring.

I particularly liked this part of the week as the software we used to create our keyring could be used to design virtually anything and you could then use 3D printing to bring your design to life!

I would definitely recommend work placement at CONFIRM as it is very well organised and provides many diverse insights into what Smart Manufacturing is and how it is changing industry. I learned a lot about smart Manufacturing during the week.

As part of the placement, we attended Tech Feile in Shannon Airport which displayed the use of smart technology in Irish company’s today. This was a great outing as it showed me some of the ways Smart Manufacturing Technologies can also be used to improve society.”
