Bernal Professor of Chemical Engineering

I was appointed as the Bernal Chair of Chemical Engineering at the University of Limerick in 2012. I am also a Visiting Research Professor of Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast (UK). In addition to confirm, I am currently a principal investigator in the SFI Investigators Programme, the Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC), the EI Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Centre (PMTC) and the EI Dairy Processing Technology Centre (DPTC). My research interests include particle/powder technology, process modelling and materials engineering. I have published over 167 international journal papers on various aspects of chemical and process engineering (Scopus: >4600 citations, h-index = 32). I am associate editor of Chemical Engineering Journal and Chemical Engineering Research and Design. I have been awarded two Royal Academy of Engineering (UK) fellowships: the ExxonMobil Fellowship in 2002 and the Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowship in 2009. My Bernal Process Engineering Research Group at UL currently comprises of 35 post-doctoral researchers and PhD students working on various aspects of chemical processing and it was awarded Research-Academic Lab of the Year at the Irish Awards in 2017. In 2017 I was appointed as Director of the SFI funded Research Centre, SSPC.

Industry Collaboration: Successful collaboration on research projects with numerous international companies and has industrially funded research projects which have delivered improvements in: product quality (BP Chemicals, via continuous distillation); new processes (AstraZeneca, via microwave drying PAT); energy/environmental efficiency (ExxonMobil and Bombardier Aerospace, via new adsorption processes); new product development new products (P&G, via a new encapsulation system; SABIC, via controlled release product); powder engineering (Roche and Pfizer, via powder flow prediction); pharmaceutical engineering (Pfizer, Eli-Lilly, GSK, Genzyme, Allergan, Sunpahrama, Ethicon, J&J, Janssen, Regeneron, Nestle, Stryker).

Prof. Walker is PI on several national manufacturing research centres; Academic Sponsor for Enterprise Ireland, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Centre (PMTC); PI on EI Dairy Processing Technology Centre (DPTC); FI on SFI Industry 4.0 Research Centre – CONFIRM; PI on SFI Research Centre - Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC).
