Eoin Hinchy

Researcher

Dr Eoin Hinchy is a Lecturer in Digital Manufacturing and Automation in the School of Engineering at the University of Limerick.

Eoin completed his undergraduate degree at University College Dublin, graduating with an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering. In December 2011, Eoin was successfully awarded an Irish Research Council Enterprise Partnership Scheme PhD Scholarship in partnership with Lufthansa Technik Turbine Shannon (LTTS), to study the diffusion braze repair process of nickel superalloy turbine components at the University of Limerick. During his postgraduate research, Eoin also worked with Rolls-Royce on a novel blown powder direct-laser-deposition additive repair process for turbine components.

After graduating his PhD in August 2016, he left the aerospace sector to begin a two year research engineer role with medical device company DePuy Synthes, part of Johnson and Johnson. In this role, Eoin worked on developing an advance metal additive manufacturing process for orthopaedic implants. During this time, Eoin completed a post graduate diploma in Medical Device Technology and Business awarded by Griffith College Dublin and Innopharma.

In 2018, Eoin returned to the University of Limerick as a post-doctoral researcher with the Confirm Smart Manufacturing research centre. His research focuses on digital manufacturing and automation, which a focus on digital twin, robotics, and additive-based manufacturing technology. Eoin is a certified Kuka robot programmer, and a certified Universal Robot cobot programmer.

In late 2019, Eoin was successfully awarded a 24 month SFI Industry Fellowship with Analog Devices. The project looks at developing a digital twin-based safety system for robotics with a view towards factory of the future. This project has strengthen ties between ADI, Confirm an Johnson and Johnson, where ADI advanced sensor technology is used to develop systems for Johnson and Johnson case studies.

In 2015, Eoin took up a fourteen month materials engineering role with LTTS and Roll-Royce, characterizing a novel state-of-the-art additive repair of Rolls-Royce seal segments.

In 2016, Eoin started a 24 month role as a materials R&D engineer with medical device company DePuy Synthes, part of Johnson and Johnson. This work focused on developing 3D printed titanium orthopaedic implants from TRL 0 to TRL5. Whilst working at DePuy Synthes, Eoin obtained a level 9 postgraduate diploma in Medical Device Technology and Business from Griffith College Dublin.

In July 2018, Eoin Hinchy returned to the University of Limerick as a postdoctoral researcher at the Confirm Centre of Smart Manufacturing where he is investigating Smart Machining – developing digital twins of machining processes with Prof Conor McCarthy and Prof Noel O’Dowd.
