Eoin Hinchy

Eoin Hinchy is a postdoctoral researcher at the Confirm Centre for Smart Manufacturing. He studied mechanical engineering at undergraduate level at University College Dublin, where he was awarded a Stage 1 academic scholarship based on his academic performance.

After his undergraduate studies, Eoin was awarded a PhD funding scholarship from the Irish Research Council as part of an Enterprise Partnership Scheme with Lufthansa Technik Turbine Shannon (LTTS). Eoin commenced his PhD at the University of Limerick in January 2012, titled “metallurgical and mechanical analysis of diffusion braze repaired nickel-based superalloys”, with Dr D.A. Tanner and Prof M.J. Pomeroy. During his PhD, Eoin presented at both national and international conferences, receiving first prize in Materials Science for his poster presentation at Microscopy Society of Ireland’s annual symposium 2015. Eoin went on to publish a paper on the interaction of diffusion braze with welded substrates in the Journal of Alloys and Compounds in January 2017.

In 2015, Eoin took up a fourteen month materials engineering role with LTTS and Roll-Royce, characterizing a novel state-of-the-art additive repair of Rolls-Royce seal segments.

In 2016, Eoin started a 24 month role as a materials R&D engineer with medical device company DePuy Synthes, part of Johnson and Johnson. This work focused on developing 3D printed titanium orthopaedic implants from TRL 0 to TRL5. Whilst working at DePuy Synthes, Eoin obtained a level 9 postgraduate diploma in Medical Device Technology and Business from Griffith College Dublin.

In July 2018, Eoin Hinchy returned to the University of Limerick as a postdoctoral researcher at the Confirm Centre of Smart Manufacturing where he is investigating Smart Machining – developing digital twins of machining processes with Prof Conor McCarthy and Prof Noel O’Dowd.
