John Barrett

Prof. John Barrett is a founder and Head of Academic Studies of the Nimbus Research Centre at Cork Institute of Technology (CIT). His research is focused on packaging, miniaturisation and embedding of cyberphysical systems in materials, objects and structures with particular emphasis on challenging and harsh application environments. He has been a lecturer and researcher in CIT since 1999 and was previously Assistant Director of Tyndall National Institute, where he also managed the Smart Systems research group. He has been active in Irish and European research in the areas of packaging and systems integration for 35 years and has won extensive research funding from national/EU programmes and industry. He has supervised over 35 postgraduate research students and has made over 100 publications and presentations in topics related to his field, including a number of invited national and international presentations. In addition to his research, he is active in communicating emerging technologies to non-expert audiences from primary school level upwards and in training researchers in presentation and public speaking skills. He is also Chair of CIT’s Postgraduate Research Board, responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring postgraduate academic quality standards across the Institute.
