Steve works on optimisation: making decisions so that things work better. This can involve many technologies: constraint/integer/dynamic/stochastic/robust/bilevel programming, Boolean satisfiability, evolution and neuroevolution, reinforcement learning, and anything else that works (often hybrid methods). Steve also works on aspects of machine learning and data analytics: feature selection, feature learning, deep learning and clustering. He also works on combining optimisation and machine learning to solve large-scale problems from industry.

Steven has worked on projects with several companies in the areas of forecasting for inventory management, forest management, risk management, scheduling of manufacturing lines, call centre optimisation, hospital waiting list reduction and deep learning, probabilistic Programming, and supply chain optimisation

Research Interests

Steven is interested in solving hard problems in optimisation and learning, especially problems requiring new hybrid approaches.
• Interested in challenging real-world problems, which often do not fit neatly into classical frameworks. Steven wrote Chapter 2 (“CNF Encodings”) in the Handbook of Satisfiability, 2009
• Main research projects are CONFIRM and Insight, both SFI-funded.
• Project carried out through Insight where Steven and his team worked on a real world, non-linear, multi-follower, bi-level optimisation problem with hundreds of follower problems. They solved this using a hybrid of Monte Carlo simulation, clustering and integer programming, and greatly outperformed genetic algorithm and TABU search approaches.
• Stevens current CONFIRM PhD student is working on Deep Reinforcement Learning applied to supply chain optimisation
