Meet the Researcher: Iván Hugo Guevara

Ivan is a CONFIRM PhD Student based at the University of Limerick.

” Research is about applying creativity and developing new ways to solve problems.”

Tell us a bit about your research...

We are using artificial intelligence to create agents that could develop 2D scenarios for robotic navigation. Creating a 2D scenario takes time, so the idea is to have some help from those “smart agents”.

What did you study as an Undergraduate?

I’m originally from Argentina and got into Computer Science when I was a little kid, so when I finished school I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I hold an MSc on Information Systems Engineering from the National and Technological University (Buenos Aires) and worked at the same time as a Teacher Assistant and Software Engineer.

What made you decide to go into research?

I always wanted to go into research but hadn’t found the right place to do it.
Research is about applying creativity and developing new ways to solve problems. It’s about innovation and a lot of hard work, of course.

What do you enjoy most about being a PhD Student or Post-Doc?

The chance to collaborate with anyone and the freedom to conduct your own research.

Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking about a career or research in STEM?

Don’t give up. STEM careers tend to be quite difficult sometimes, so try to go one step at a time.
