Meet the Researcher: Alicia Soto Bono

Alicia is a CONFIRM PhD Student based at Munster Technological Univeristy, Cork.

” Just study what you love, you will not regret it. “

Tell us a bit about your research...

Currently, we are working on Energy Efficient Manufacturing using Digital Twins. The objective of this project is to develop a DT for real-time prediction with data-driven process modelling combined with ML techniques to be applied by an MPC controller to optimize the operation of manufacturing systems to significantly reduce the energy consumption of a manufacturing process.

What did you study as an Undergraduate?

I studied a Honours Bachelor Degree in Electromechanical Engineering at Loyola University in Seville (Spain) and specialized at the Electrical branch. The subjects that I enjoyed the most were the Electrical and Automation ones.

What made you decide to go into research?

I enjoy problem-solving and facing challenges every day. I also love learning new things and work giving the best of myself to contribute in this field.

What do you enjoy most about being a PhD Student or Post-Doc?

I enjoy participating in events where I can learn from other people.

Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking about a career or research in STEM?

If you are a curious person who enjoys problem-solving and loves STEM you should study it whether it is an undergraduate degree or PhD no matter if people tell you to be afraid of it, just study what you love, you will not regret it. With love and effort, you can get wherever you want and be happy.
