Meet the Researcher: Souvik Kundu

Souvik is a CONFIRM PhD student based in Tyndall National Institute, Cork.

“I enjoy learning new things which are practical and thinking how my research can actually contribute and make an impact in the future society. “

Tell us a bit about your research...

I am doing research in giving the feeling of touch in virtual reality without physically touching that object. If the delay between the touching of objects virtually and feeling this touch is large then it won’t feel that realistic. The delay should be as low as possible. I am working on reducing the delay of the system.

Could your research have any potential applications for future global crises, like COVID-19?

My research has huge potential in this type of scenario. One can do remote operation like tele-robotic operations, sitting in their own house and while controlling the robot in the industries. People could also do virtual meetings more interactively.

What did you study as an Undergraduate?

I pursued my Bachelor’s in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Vellore Institute of Technology, India. I was interested in doing research from that time. I did research internship in Canada which was very helpful in learning about the research environment and finding other opportunities as well.

What made you decide to go into research?

I was always interested in finding solutions to problems and thinking in a different perspective. Doing research is nothing but knowing what has already been done to solve a particular problem and finding a better solution and prove that scientifically.

What do you enjoy most about being a PhD Student?

I enjoy learning new things which are practical and thinking how my research can actually contribute and make an impact in the future society.

Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking about a career or research in STEM?

Do whatever your heart wants to do!!
