Meet the Researcher: Iman Abaspur Kazerouni

Iman is a CONFIRM SMART 4.0 MSCA Research Fellow based in the University of Limerick.

“Research in Artificial intelligence field is the best opportunity for me to build my fantasy world”

Tell us a bit about your research...

Daily, millions of tons of industrial feedstocks, components and ingredients flow into plants and warehouses while equal measures of packages, products and waste streams flow out. Each material movement is handled by either a person or manned vehicle, requiring vast amounts of workers and vehicles across every sector. I am working on a vision system of smart mobile robots in the industrial environment to help these robots detect objects and find their paths automatically.

Could your research be of benefit to society in any way?

We can use smart robots in the industrial environments and stores for any world crises. As the smart robots don’t need to keep a safe distance to slow the spread of diseases, they can keep working in any lock-down situation.

What did you study as an Undergraduate?

I received both my BSc and MSc degrees in Electronic Engineering from the Hakim Sabzevari University, Iran. In 2014, I completed a PhD in Hakim Sabzevari University on the topic “Early breast cancer detection using thermal images”. My PhD research focused on the design of a smart system for mass detection in mammography and thermography images. I started working at the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering (Esfarayen University of Technology) as an assistant professor in 2015 and then I joined the Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CRIS-University of Limerick) in 2019 as a postdoc researcher. Now I am a SMART 4.0 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow researcher with CONFIRM. My research interests focus on image processing, machine learning, deep learning, and robotic processing systems.

What made you decide to go into research?

Research in Artificial intelligence field is the best opportunity for me to build my fantasy world. As a researcher, I can develop my idea and find the answers to the questions about human intelligence. I learn new things in my research path every day and every day is a new day to move forward.

What attracted you to the CONFIRM SMART 4.0 MSCA opportunity?

The SMART 4.0 MSCA position is not just about research and lab. It is a position to work on state-of-the-art science subjects. Researchers can work in an industrial environment for 3 months. I would like to be an independent researcher after 2 years.

Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking about a career or research in STEM?

It is a good opportunity for the people who are patient and curious, being interest to build smart world. CONFIRM Centre has prepared a professional environment for study and research.
