The WSN group at Tyndall balances research excellence with the delivery of high impact commercial outputs, in the form of technology and people tranfer to Irish industry thus enabling sustainability and growth in Irish start-ups, SMEs and multinationals. The group has a track record of identifying and protecting novel IP arising from his research and his group has executed 12 licenses over the past 5 years, for which Brendan received a University “Impact Award” from the UCC president in 2014.
Since 2009, Brendan’s research group has consistently licensed IP to industry, in Ireland, USA and China, accounting for over 20% of all UCC licenses in this period, the highest for any one team across the whole UCC campus. This industry-focused, applied research agenda that I have developed is core to the activities of the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) Group resulting in significant transfer of technology/IP and staff to industry.
Brendan has an established track record of identifying and protecting novel IP arising from this research and Brendan’s group has executed 12 licenses over the past 5 years. In parallel, Brendan’s research outputs have been recognized by Brendan’s peers both nationally and internationally which is demonstrated by Brendan’s publication track record (Google scholar h-index of 23 with over 2000 citations).
As Head of Group of the WSN Group within the Tyndall National Institute, brendan has been responsible for at least 12 licenses to industry and facilitated 5 start up companies implementing smart systems technology: Including GRASP Wearable Technologies (2014), Endeco (2010), PMD (2012),Full Flight Technologies (2011) and Impact Microelectronics (1999)
On the basis of Brendan’s commercialisation activities in UCC (~20% of the total for the University), the UCC president determined that I should be given an “University Impact Award” in of “ his outstanding achievements across a range of criteria including creativity and innovation, building collaborations and identifying and developing strategic opportunities.”

o Brendan O’Flynn is a Senior Staff Researcher at the Tyndall National Institute, and is Head of Group for Wireless Sensor Networks. Since 2004 he has been defining and leading the research activities of the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) group. This multidisciplinary group consists of over 20 researchers of comprising of postdoctoral researchers, postgraduate students, engineers and scientists.
o The research focus of the WSN group is in the development of next generation embedded systems. These low-power consumption solutions are designed to meet the requirements associated with the indefinite lifetime deployment of low maintenance context aware sensing systems for deployment in the world around us so as to create information
o The WSN group is developing system level hardware and software for the “Internet of Things” in the applications we are investigating – energy/building monitoring, environmental monitoring and health/motion monitoring.
